University Of Texas: Part 7

My long-term career goals include the pursuit of research in the field of Industrial Engineering in general and “Operations Research” in particular, and implementing them in a research oriented environment in my home country where Industrial growth has been tremendous during the present age and I wish to contribute to it. I have found that a career in research is both intellectually stimulating and satisfying and so I have decided to take this up as my career objective. To achieve my long-term goal, my immediate objective is to pursue a MS in Industrial Engineering.

University Of Texas: Part 3

The academic foundation at NIT Trichy provided me with a leverage to involve myself in research at the premier educational Institutions like Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur through competitive selection process for summer research project. The opportunity to work in one of the top research institutes was indeed a great boost for my ambition to pursue a career in research. I was among the 3 students selected from NIT Trichy, for a summer research project at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur towards the end of my second year. The project guide Professor Dr Jayanta Kumar Dutt said, it would be a real test of my mettle, as no one in his workgroup had worked on “Temperature Control of an Electric Heat Furnaces Considering Heat Losses” earlier and it would require a lot of time, although he believed that the solution was possible if dedicated efforts were put in. This however did not faze me; it became my reason for choosing this topic, as I enjoyed pursuing challenging tasks. Working on this project, a novel approach was devised to accurately follow a time-temperature profile for a heat-treatment process.

University Of Texas: Part 6

Over the past three years of my undergraduate studies, I have been able to strike a judicious balance between curricular academics, research, and hobbies. The educational environment in Kuwait, where I completed my high school, was completely different from that in India. At Trichy, I got exposed to a whole new culture and to adapt myself to this diversified environment, I struck a balance between my engineering life and extra curricular activities and got involved in numerous extra curricular activities. Karate besides yoga and meditation has helped in increasing my concentration level. The leadership courses I underwent helped me to lead the Mechanical Engineering Association (MEA) of NIT Trichy as an executive member and in organizing the National Level Symposium – SYNERGY ‘05 and ‘06 where I conducted paper presentations, technical quizzes and other events at the symposium. I am currently involved in training the junior year students for placements, an endeavor to train them for the campus placements in their final year.

University Of Texas: Part 5

Towards the beginning of my senior year, realizing industrial engineering to be an apt career for me, I opted for Industrial Engineering and Operations Management as part of my final year undergraduate curriculum. I am currently involved in an on-going final year project titled, “Multi-Echelon Inventory Model” under Dr. A.Noorul Haq, Production Department, NIT Trichy. These projects have enabled me to couple my creativity with my engineering knowledge and have given me an insight into the practical problems that may arise in the application of theoretical knowledge to real life. The successful completion of these projects required creativity, dedication, perseverance and the ability to work in a team with positive attitude. These, I believe, are the qualities that will make me a successful researcher. To keep abreast of the latest developments in Industrial Engineering, I am currently a student member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE).

University Of Texas: Part 4

My keen interest to understand industry’s approach towards research made me apply and eventually qualify for a project at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Bangalore, one of the pioneering defense organization for research and development in the country. Under the guidance of Mr. S. Murali, the DGM of the Transmission Assembly of the Helicopter Division, the “Design of Tool for Pattern Checking and Backlash in an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH)” was carried out. It involved designing a tool to determine both the pattern and the backlash of a crown gear and a pinion arrangement in the Main Gear Box of an ALH. The micro motion study conducted on the tool, used principles of work and time study for cost determination and reducing inspection time. The idea of using the tool to lessen the operation time was challenging and involved the use of mathematical tools. The company approved the new tool and ordered its production to be used for over hauling process. The exposure to the institution’s systematic yet complex organizational and operational layout interested me. This made me realize the importance of Industrial Engineering and its use in Industries. The HAL library catered to my desire to delve deeper into the subject. Further more, the two-week training at Kuwait Oil Company, Kuwait provided me with extensive insights to the working of the industry and the methodologies employed for productivity optimization.

Statement of purpose: Part 5

I underwent a training program in Burns Philp India Limited (an MNC) after my third semester in 2003. Here, the process is responsible for manufacture of yeast by budding; the steps included clarifying the molasses, fermentation, centrifugation, filtration and drying. My project guide Mr. Rangan Bhattacharya motivated me to know minute details of the relevant equipment including the cooling water towers and NaCl chiller plant. I delved into the different aspects of the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), quality control and safety planning.

Undergraduate college has offered lots of scope for overall development which I utilized well but I have never let my studies take a backseat. During these college days my time management skills enabled me to strike a balance between studies and other activities. As my curriculum vitae shows, I have learnt karate during my first year of undergraduate college which gave a boost to my concentration power. Being in the college dance troupe has helped me evolve as a team worker and as an individual. The innumerous dance competitions won by the college dance troupe in recognized fests like in IIT Chennai, JIPMER Pondicherry and IIM Bangalore reflect the amount of intellectual exertion put in by each one of us. A trained Carnatic musician, I also bagged prizes for solo singing competitions in western music in undergraduate college. I believe in qualitative study which is why in spite of my extracurricular activities, I pride myself in being presently department rank fourth.

Statement of purpose: Part 4

First step to research is to know the facts and the dos and the don’t s. Previous study has to be extensively done to know the best way to proceed, be it experimentation or historical data analysis. Groundwork related to sampling and reducing the noise factors has to be accurate. Experimental designing should be backed up with a tireless zeal and the calibre to carry them out efficiently. Getting results at ITC India was fascinating and fulfilling to me. While working against all odds, not only did I become aware of the hard work and perseverance necessary for research work but I also realized my unconscious thirst for experimental research.

Statement of purpose: Part 3

Facing tough competition, I earned myself a summer internship project at Indian Tobacco Company (ITC India) in 2005. At ITC, under the guidance of Mr.Shyamal Chatterjee and in a span of two months, I got an opportunity to do a project and get an experience of professional life. The project was aimed at reducing the % ejections by means of process optimization. Montgomery’s book on SQC guided me on topics like factorial and orthogonal experimentation techniques, sampling, concept of noise factors, uncontrollable/ controllable factors and their level determination. It gave me an insight about DOE and various theories of TQM. I also explored into the concept of COPQ (cost of poor quality). Firstly the dominant factors were chosen by regression analysis. Secondly the levels for chosen uncontrollable factors were decided comprehensively by historical data analysis and sampling. I used Taguchi method to frame in an orthogonal array of extensive experiments; the noise factors were minimized. SPSS, a statistical toolkit and solver function in Microsoft excel were used for computing the value of parameters for the least of ejections. Apart from giving two presentations on my project work, I studied the boiler plant design, calculated steam cost per unit and efficiency.

Statement of purpose: Part 2

In my first project in 2004 at IIT Kharagpur under Asst Professor Dr. Sirshendu De and Professor Dr. Sunanda Dasgupta, namely” Cloud point extraction ( CPE) of aromatic alcohols with the use of surfactants” , I studied CPE of surfactant TX-114 to remove para nitro phenol and aniline from industrial effluents. The various factors taken into consideration for orthogonal and diagonal experimentation were surfactant and salt concentration, concentration of the substance to be extracted (PNP on aniline) and temperature of extraction. I ascertained the three levels each these controllable factors and conducted experiments in the laboratory and calculated the % extraction profile. The results were computed graphically and analyzed to give an optimum set of values for each factor for a given effluent concentration.

Statement of purpose

Well when I think of studying abroad, away from home, family and friends, one might ask why do I wish to do it? For me I made the decision out of my own volition, to follow a dream larger than life.

My interest in Chemistry came from the very beginning, organic chemistry being my favorite and it has grown through the years from secondary school to undergraduate studies. I strove hard to gain a strong and comprehensive background in Chemical engineering in one of the best campuses in India, at NIT Trichy (formerly REC Trichy). I have always enjoyed grasping the concepts and now the only way to justify my affection towards this stream is by pursuing higher studies in Chemical engineering. It would be immensely rewarding for me to be able to contribute to this subject that has given me so much pleasure and joy.
